We believe that historical preservation is the essence of consultation lending a sense of excitement and mystery when a building is architecturally examined. A building, whether occupied or vacant, can resonate with the spirit of past people and events. It is said that this excitement can heighten because the unknown emerges with increasing clarity as materials used throughout are evaluated revealing the lives of its past occupants. Therefore, before any repair or reroof project occurs, the historic value of materials used should be understood. With this in mind, a complete internal and external inspection of the roof should be planned to determine all of the causes of failure. Finally, identification of alternatives for repair or replacement should be appropriated.

Our services include locating the problem, conducting a historical evaluation, and appropriating materials whether new or reclaimed. When repairing a roof, we never use anything than an exact match. Finally, we will guide precautions and offer maintenance.

Consultation is invaluable because many slate and tile roofs are being unnecessarily destroyed by careless and unknowing contractors. These roofs could otherwise still have many years of service left.

Here is a typical example of our services. Please note the numerous slates that are face nailed (see photo below) and then caulked which will soon leak. The ridge depicted here is starting to leak and should be covered with corrosive reistant metal such as copper.

The photographs below depicts what many roofers do that results in damage to a roof. They use tar to fix a leak. Tar never stops a leak and always hastens to deteriorate the roof. In most cases, when tar is used, the contractor who performs the work always seems to get it wrong, placing tar in all the wrong spots. They never address the problem area(s) and in the meantime they break even more slates in their unusual attempts. Replacing the damaged slates with the exact slate to match in age, size, type, removing all tar, and correcting the original problem is the proper measure to be taken.
