Fortunately the slate depicted here is a Vermont sea-green and as with all Vermont slates is of S1 quality. This means it will last much longer than the metal flashings. The copper valleys and broken slates needed to be replaced. Note that identical slate to match was used so that the repair now is not detectable.

Unfortunately, this home owner hired a contractor who only knows one way to fix a slate roof ... with tar. Of course this did not fix the roof because tar never stops a leak. In just about all cases, tar only furthers to hasten the deterioration of the roof itself. And as is usually the case with using a contractor unfamiliar with slate roof repair, they broke and damaged even more slates in his attempt to fix this roof. Once finished, much to the dismay of the home owner, this contractor indicated that the entire slate roof was worn out and needed complete replacement. This simply was not true.

Please notice the before and after pictures. Now, the homeowner can rest assured that his slate roof will last another 80 years with no maintenance.

The historic home depicted has an original stucco exterior that was severely cracked and damaged do to age and deteriorated counter flashings. Unfortunately, several contractors then installed tar to nearly the entire wall. Installing new stucco could result in cracks which would then once again allow wind driven rain to enter the rooms below. As seen, the problem was permanently resolved by use of lead coated copper panels installed with locked and soldered seams while still maintaining the original integrity of this historic home located in the Marvin Gardens section of Margate NJ.

We don't like to repeat ourselves, however easily 75% of the work we do involves restoring improper slate repairs. Improper repairs that in the long run, costs building owners money and in even worse cases, building owners simply give up and remove an otherwise perfectly restorable slate roof. Let me add, that tile and copper roofs unfortunately suffer the same fate as well. So here we go again.....notice the before picture with mismatched slates, tar in the valleys, numerous face nailed slates, caulk, and the many cracked and damaged slates all due to contractors who specialize in incompetency. Even gutter cleaning contractors can damage these roofs. The after picture shows the result of a properly restored roof. Now, if the homeowner can only keep future contractors off his roof, he should have no more need for repairs.

This bay window roof has had antique Vermont slate installed instead of copper.
The homeowners felt slate was more elegant.
